Now in the shadow of the silver water tower, rising like an iron castle keep above the town, the tower where a siren still sounds every noon, Doug sees one familiar sight and then another. The drugstore on the corner, the five and dime, the funeral parlor/hardware store, the grocery after that. The broad and empty streets, the high country curbs, the depot deserted forty years, the red brick buildings and tin fronts of Phara, Texas. He imagines the whoosh of fans, the dry and musty smells, the people inside passing time, peering out at searing heat, drinking the fifth Dr. Pepper of the day. And then the town is gone, two main streets and that's that. Doug takes a farm road east, sees Royce and his friend are still behind. The gravel road winds through black gumbo land where Doug has found precious new life in the soil, past low Texas hills stubbed with dry summer grass, past bridges and dry creeks to the turnoff he knows in his sleep. Where he knows every rock and stunted tree. Where he's safe from Erlene and her TV preacher and her pack of doctor suitors in pursuit. She knows Waxahachie, but she doesn't know this. She can't follow him here.
